It is believed he served with the Virginia Militia circa 1776. This appears to be proven by land grants given in Wilkes County, NC and by the fact that he was named Justice of Wilkes in 1805."
John Carlton of Orange County and Albemarle County Virginia and Some of His Descendants 1720 - 1989 (1989) by Lt. Col. George H. Carlton, page 28: "He died in the Spring of 1845 near Boomer, Wilkes County, NC and was buried in the family cemetery on his farm."
Several researchers suggested that the Carlton family cemetery is the same one called by other names: Old Dutch Graveyard, Old German Burying Ground, Land family cemetery, among others, and that he might be buried at Old Dutch Graveyard with his daughter Jane Carlton Land.
A 5th-great-grandson (#47426049) reports: "Thomas Carlton, Sr had a family cemetery on his land which was recorded by George McNeill in 2002. It is located on SR1130 (Beaver Creek Road). The exact number of graves could not be certain but 13 unmarked and 7 marked graves were found. I have visited this cemetery."
Corrections, additions, suggestions and ESPECIALLY GPS coordinates and street addresses are welcome.∼Compiled by Joyce Dany McNeil & George Franklin McNeil. Family History Collection Wilkes Heritage Collection .
