Hall of Fame Baseball Player. Real name Maximillian George Carnarius. He took the name Max Carey when he played his first professional game to protect his amateur status while he was still playing college ball for Concordia College. He was accomplished at stealing bases and led the league ten times in his 20 year career. He had a total of 738 steals, the National League record until 1974 and is still ninth in major league history. In 1922 he stole 51 bases and was only caught twice. In his career he stole home 33 times, second to Ty Cobb's 50 on the all time list. He was the best defensive center fielder of his era. He played for the Pittsburgh Pirates for the first 16 years of his career, winning a World Series in 1925. He finished his playing career with Brooklyn and then managed Brooklyn for two years. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1961.
