From an early age he wanted to be a monk and when his mother died he was 19,and he became a Benedictine. He felt they needed reforming and formed the Cistercian order in 1115. He was zealous for the Church and dealt with the heretic Abelard. He was a true lover of Christ and tried to keep close to the truth of Scripture. He supported the disastrous second Crusade.
He is credited with writing "Jesus the very thought of Thee"
He was buried in Clairvaux but his remains were removed in 1792 to Troyes Cathedral
