This good woman departed this life about midnight last Friday night. She had been suffering for quite awhile with heart failure and an accompanying shortness of breath. For months she was unable to rest in any but sitting position. Careful and considerate nursing by her two daughters, Bettie and Mattie was a great comfort to her in her latter days, and never a word of complaint was heard from the weakened mother, Mrs. Crabill was a devout and constant member of St. John’s Reformed Church of Harrisville, and with her husband enjoyed the holy communion at her home., expressing her great desire for fellowship with God and his people in the sanctuary.
Living in one community for about thirty years, she endeared herself to old and young by her kind offices of love and sympathy for the distressed and sick. A very large concourse of friends and relatives gathered at her late home on Sunday afternoon Nov 22d to pay their last respects to their departed friend and neighbor. Her pastor, Rev. A. H. Smith, conducted the service from the text Job 19:25-27, "I know that my Redeemer Liveth, and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth; sad though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God; whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another.”
He remains were reverently placed beneath the clods of the valley in the graveyard at “Hal Crabill’s”, there to rest beneath the shadow of the Massanutten Mountain beside the beautiful bend of the Shenandoah River as it skirts the base of the knoll of the cemetery plot.
The husband and family have the sympathy of a host of sorrowful friends and the assurance that mother Crabill has gone to her eternal rest.
She was born Feb. 11, 1830, and died early in the morning of Nov. 21, 1903, aged 73 years, 9 months and 10 days. Baptized in infancy by Rev. Graves and confirmed by Rev. St. John Rinker, Nov. 11th 1849. Her maiden name was Rachel Susanna Will, and was married to Daniel B. Crabill Aug. 15, 1851, with whom she had five children, two sons and three daughters, Samuel, Elizabeth, Mattie Bowman, Lucy V. Wiseman and a son dead. The family appreciates the kindness of their neighbors and hereby thanks them for their assistance.
