US Congresswoman, US Ambassador. A member of the Democratic Party, she served Louisiana's 2nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1973 until 1991. Born into a family with a history of public service, she was a descendant of former US Congressman Thomas Claiborne. Born Marie Corinne Morrison Claiborne, she attained her Bachelor of Arts degree from Sophie Newcomb College of Tulane University in New Orleans. She married Thomas Hale Boggs (who went onto become a US Congressman) and worked as a teacher in addition to raising their family. After her husband perished in a plane crash in 1972, she ran for and won his Congressional seat. Her rearing in the South exposed her to the harsh and brutal treatment of Blacks and these experiences helped shape her attitude towards social programs later in life. During her tenure in Congress, she served as a member of the House Banking and Currency Committee and was an advocate for inclusion of women in the Equal Opportunity Act of 1974. After leaving Congress, she was appointed by President Clinton to serve as US Ambassador to the Vatican (1997 to 2001). She was the mother of TV news journalist Cokie Roberts. She died from age related causes.
