He was a professor at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri 1925-1950. He was the chairman of the Intersynodical Committee on Hymnology and Liturgics 1929-1949 which worked on the production of "The Lutheran Hymnal". He helped found Concordia Historical Institute 1927. He was the editor of "Concordia Junior Messenger" 1928-1939; "Concordia Historical Institute Quarterly" 1928-1950; "Martin Luther in English Poetry". He was the associate editor of "The Cresset" (Valparaiso University) 1937-1950. He is the author of numerous books on Lutheranism and Lutheran history.
