Hall of Fame Major League Baseball manager. Born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, he spent 15 seasons in the minor leagues playing for the Louisville Colonels, Toledo Mud Hens, and the Buffalo Bisons. In 1926, he made it to the major leagues when appointed manager of the National League's Chicago Cubs. Over a 24-year major league career, he managed the Chicago Cubs from 1926 to 1930, New York Yankees from 1931 to 1946 and Boston Red Sox from 1948 to 1950. He achieved nine pennants (one with the Chicago Cubs and eight with the Yankees) and won the World Series seven times with the Yankees, including four consecutive years, 1936-1939. His teams also placed second seven times and never finished out of the first division. He compiled a .615 career winning percentage for the regular season and .698 in the World Series, both the highest in Major League history. In 1957, he was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.
