Born to James Ezred Keegan (1873-1933) & Nellie Elizabeth "Bettie" Winn Keegan (1876-1945), who married July 14, 1900, in Natchitoches, LA.

Kearnie married Marian Alma Rhee Morgan (1913-1982) on May 12, 1933, in Natchitoches, LA. One daughter, Kay Keegan of Anchorage, KY. The family lived at 2008 Cedar Lane in Nashville, TN.

Kearnie was a grad­u­ate of North­west­ern State Col­lege, Natch­i­to­ches, Lou­i­si­a­na (BA 1927), and South­west­ern Bap­tist The­o­lo­gi­cal Sem­in­a­ry, Fort Worth, Tex­as (ThM 1933). In 1945, How­ard Payne Col­lege (Brownwood, TX) award­ed him an hon­o­ra­ry doc­torate de­gree.

He pas­tored at the First Baptist Church, Nat­chi­to­ches, Louisiana (1932-35); Em­man­u­el Church, Alex­an­dria, Lou­i­si­a­na (1937-41); First Bap­tist Church, Long­view, Tex­as (1941-45); and Tem­ple Bap­tist Church, Los An­ge­les, Cal­i­for­nia (1945-50).

He was for ma­ny years a Bap­tist youth lead­er, and in 1950 was elect­ed sec­re­ta­ry of the Stu­dent De­part­ment of the Bap­tist Sun­day School Board, Nash­ville, Ten­nes­see. He al­so served se­ven years on the Ex­ec­u­tive Com­mit­tee of the South­ern Bap­tist Con­ven­tion and on the Board of Trust­ees of East Tex­as Bap­tist Col­lege.

Dr. G. Kearnie Keegan, 53, of Nashville, Tenn., head of Southern Baptist Convention student work, died last Tuesday, and his funeral was Friday (Sept. 16) at 10 a.m. in the First Baptist Church, Nashville, Tenn.

Dr. Keegan, whose death came unexpectedly, was secretary of the SBC student department. He suffered a heart attack Tuesday night in St. Louis as he was about to board a plane.

He was well known for his work with the Louisiana Baptist Convention. He had held various positions with the SBC, and was a member of the executive board of both the Louisiana and Texas Baptist Conventions, as well as a member of the board of trustees of the East Texas Baptist College, Marshall.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Keegan; and a daughter, Miss Kay Keegan, both of Nashville.

Born in Bunkie, Dr. Keegan and his family moved to Natchitoches, where he attended, and was graduated from Northwestern. He began his professional career as a teacher at Many High School, and during the summers, traveled throughout Louisiana, directing music for evangelistic crusades and Baptist encampments. As a talented pianist and soloist (Note: he was a tenor), Dr. Keegan has recordings for several recording companies.

Pulpits he has served include Natchitoches, Alexandria, Fort Worth, and Longview, Tex., and Los Angeles, Calif., to mention a few.

He received his master's degree from Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth.

In 1935, he became Sunday School Training Union and Baptist Student Union Secretary for the Louisiana State Baptist Convention.

He has also served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention, member of the board of trustees, East Texas Baptist College, president of the Southwestern Seminary Alumni Assn., executive vice president, and acting president of California Baptist Theological Seminary, president of the board of directors for Children's Baptist Home Mission Society.

In 1945, he received an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Howard Payne College, Brownwood, Tex.

He became secretary of Southern Baptist student work in 1950. He was later elected chairman of the Administrative Committee of the Baptist World Alliance.
