Flying Officer Anderson lost his life in the crash of 439 Squadron's Hawker Typhoon IB (#RB369) aircraft near Dingden, Germany. Previously reported as being missing after an air operations search and destroy mission against enemy flak positions in Dingden, he was officially declared to have lost his life. At the time of his death he was on his second tour with 65 missions flown.

A "Caterpillar" tractor operator by trade, residing in Eckville, Alberta, Canada, he enlisted in the RCAF on 12 Dec 1940 in Calgary, Alberta.


Son of Simon Christian and Gonda (née VanMaarion) Anderson of Calgary [father born in Denmark; mother born in the Netherlands]; brother of Christian, Charley, Carl, Mary, Gonda, Lillian and his brother, Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve Steward John Anderson, who was serving on the H.M.C.S. 'Spikenard' and who lost his life on 10 Feb 1942 [John is honoured and remembered at the Halifax Memorial, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada]..


Flying Officer William Anderson is commemorated on Page 491 of Canada's Second World War Book of Remembrance.

He is also commemorated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
