George Washington Evans, 69, of the Iotla Community, died Sunday in a Franklin hospital after a brief illness.

A native of Macon County, he was a son of the late Charles E. and Rose Mae Younce Evans. He was retired from the U.S. Navy with 25 years of service.

Surviving are his wife, Lucy Campbell Evans; two daughter, Miss Connie Mae Evans of the home and Mrs. Emma Lee Carpenter of Franklin; a son, Charles E. Evans of Franklin; three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Campbell of Franklin, Mrs. Lillie Riley of Andrews and Mrs. Bonnie Medlin of Albermarle; a brother, Lonnie Evans of Rutherfordton; and three grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday in Iotla Baptist Church. The Revs. Larry Steppleton and M.I. Brock officiated and pallbearers were Jerry Evans, Melburn Evans, Lee Campbell, Jim Campbell, Charles Campbell. Burial was in the church cemetery with graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post 108.
Neal and Potts Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
