SEVERE LOSS TO PARISH IN FR. STEINHAUER'S DEATH
Young Assistant at Holy Cross Church a Victim of Epidemic. Death is Severe Blow to Pastor and Parish Alike.

HIS FUNERAL PRIVATE

In the death of Fr. William Steinhauer, the beloved young assistant priest of Holy Cross parish in this city, who passed away Friday at 7:45 AM, both congregation and the pastor, Rev. James J. Wade, have suffered an unrequiting loss that is shockingly tragic and severe because of its untimeliness.
In the life of Holy Cross parish the deceased, though only 29 years old, had come to fill an immense gap caused by the protracted illness of Rev. Father Wade, who had been incapacitated for nearly three years due to a paralytic stroke.
Most pathetic and sad too, was the fact that both Father Wade and Rev. John I. Schenck, second assistant at Holy Cross, are also stricken with influenza at St. Vincent's Hospital, neither being able to attend the last sad rites of their beloved fellow priest and co-worker.

SKETCH OF HIS LIFE
Rev. William C. Steinhauer was born in Harrison, O. in 1889. He moved to Evansville, Ind. and studied at St. Meinrad's Seminary, being ordained to the priesthood in May 1913. Immedaitely after his ordination he was appointed assistant to Father Wade.
About three years agoe when Father Wade took ill, the burdens of the large parish of Holy Cross fell upon Father Steinhauer. With singular devotion and energy he took up the work, and with his quiet but effective manner he endeared himself to his entire flock. His capabilities became evident in every detail of his parish duties. Not only in the frequent and assiduous call upon the sick of the parish, but also in the social and musical life of Holy Cross Church.
