The only child of Henry and Bernadine (nee Vossman) was born June 29, 1926 in Kloppenburg, Germany. In March of the next year he came to Canada with his parents, to the St. Gregor area and then to the Freyling farm.
Spring of '28 saw a homestead, log house built on NE Vi 5-39-19- W2. The land was heavily wooded with poplar and willow, and Henry helped his parents clear the land. Fields of wheat and other coarse grains soon replaced the willow and poplar. Henry especially preferred harvest with its many stooks - they provided such a peaceful place to lie and sleep.
Young Henry Carl started school in Bunker Hill School, but as yet he knew no English and did the best he could to communicate with his German. His 3Vi miles to school by foot in spring and fall and by caboose in winter took most of his days' interests away from caring for things around the farm such as fetching the cows and milking them.
A happy day came to Henry when he came home one day from attending grade eight to find his dad had bought a tractor. That did it. He would be a farmer. During W.W.II, Young Henry was not permitted to own a gun, but after the war he used a gun enough to make up for lost practice. He became quite a marksman - practicing on gophers and prairie chicken. He was getting prepared for bigger game, a sport he still thoroughly enjoys today.
November 22, 1950, Henry married Eleanore Stumborg of Bruno. Born March 13, 1928 Eleanore was one of ten children of Harry Stumborg and Mary Kramer. Both Mary and Harry were themselves immigrants from the United States. Mary came from North Dakota to Bruno at the age of 7 in 1905. They were the first family who were able to unload at Bruno rather than having to make the extra miles by rail to Rosthern.
Eleanore received most of her education at the Ursuline Academy in Bruno. It was while she was in training as a nurse in St. Elizabeth hospital in Humboldt that Henry caught her eye and before too long Henry and Eleanore were wed in Bruno.
Henry and Eleanore have five daughters: twins Janet and Judy, Marilyn, Rita and Carol and five grandchildren - Duane and Tammy Schemenauer, Todd and Trina Breker and Susan Acton. They are still very active in community affairs and enjoy their hobbies of fishing, hunting and travelling.
