Member, Indiana University Athletic Hall of Fame and Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Was Indiana "Mr. Basketball" in 1947 after leading Shelbyville to the state championship. In the championship showdown, his stellar play helped counter that of Terre Haute. Garfield's future University of Kansas and NBA star, Clyde Lovellette. Garrett then went to Indiana University where he broke the color line and became the first African American basketball star in the Big Ten Conference, winning All-Conference honors and was an All-American in 1951. After graduation, he spent two years in the Army in Japan, then played with the Harlem Globetrotters for two years. He then began teaching and coached Indianapolis Crispus Attucks to the 1959 basketball state championship. He subsequently served as Attucks' athletic director, a teacher at the Indiana Vocational Technical College and, having earned a master's degree from Butler University, was assistant dean for student services at Indiana-Purdue University-Indianapolis at the time of his death. In September of 2000, a new gymnasium at Shelbyville High School was named in his honor. In 2020 Indiana University renamed its fieldhouse in his honor.
