Music Lyricist. The wife of jazz legend Dave Brubeck, she played a significant role in the launching and success of her husband's music career. While attending College of the Pacific in Stockton, California, where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree, she met Dave and the pair married in 1942. During the course of their union, they produced six children. Iola had experience in radio as an actress, prior to managing Dave's career. By the early 1950s, Brubeck had formed his trio. Iola is widely credited for originating the idea that college campuses served as an ideal place to perform, thus catapulting "The Dave Brubeck Trio" into the national spotlight. From her pioneering vision, many other acts followed the same path to success. She collaborated with Dave on the theater musical "The Real Ambassadors" which featured Louis Armstrong and Carmen McRae. Additionally, she wrote lyrics to scores of Dave's pieces, notably "Take Five Live", which was recorded by Carmen McRae in 1961. Iola died from cancer.
