Johns parents were Raphael John Schell and Katherine Degenhardt Schell both born and died in Russia, Sewald area. They were Volga Germans who went to Russia under Catherine the Great to farm. Over the years, conditions grew worse and when forced to choose between their German culture and religion, the children chose to come to the United States in the early 1900's. John Peter was a willow basket maker in Russia and Siberia. He traded his wares for food and clothing. John married Katherine Margaret Applehanz 27 Oct 1900 in Sewald, Russia. His first three children John, Elizabeth and Ann ere born in Siberia. His brother-in-law Andrew John Kramer 13485428 sent money for the family to come to the United States. They landed at Ellis Island, New York in 1913 and were quaranteed as Elizabeth had small pox. They went to Colorado and then to Rupert Idaho in 1917. In 1920 they moved to Toppenish WA. They were farm laborers, later purchasing their own farms and working in the fruit industry.
