Composer. Born of Jewish parentage at Wechwotynetz in Podolia (now Republic of Moldova), he co-founded the St. Petersburg Conservatorium, of which he was director until 1867. His younger brother, Nikolai, was also a remarkable pianist who founded the conservatorium of music at Moscow. He died from heart disease in Peterhof, St. Petersburg, and is buried in the Tikhvin Cemetery at the Alexander Monastery in St. Petersburg.
