Amzi Babbitt Emmons was born November 9th, 1846, at Chester, N.J., and prepared for college at Chester Institute.
After graduation [from Amherst College, in 1869] he entered Union Theological Seminary, from which institution he took his diploma in 1873, his course having been interrupted by ill health. He was ordained October 28th, 1873, and during the following year was acting pastor of the Congregational church of Stratton, Vt.
During the next three years he was acting pastor of the Congragational (sic) church at Jamaica, Vt., and during a portion of this time filled the office of superintendent of schools. During the year 1876 – 1877 he was Scribe of the Vermont Convention of Congregational Churches. In 1877, he removed to Oxford, Mass., and was acting pastor of the Congregational church there from October 1st of that year till October 16th, 1878, when he was installed as pastor. He was married May 28th, 1873, at Chester, N.J. to Miss Melva Sophia Topping. They have two children, Mary Forrester, born June 16th, 1874, and Floyd, born November 4th, 1877.
