Wife of famous Author Norman Fitzroy Maclean - (Author of A River Runs Through It). Married September 24 1931 Helena Montana. Further info given by Susan - Find A Grave. (If you have any info on Jessie or photos please send it - Thanks Tom C.)
-- Per marriage record (FamilySearch.org) – she married Norman Maclean on 24 Sep 1931 in Helena. That record listed her birthplace as Butte. I looked through some Butte-Silver Bow records, but they are not indexed yet. I did not find her birth record. I did look at Butte city directories for 1904, 1905, 1906, and did find about a dozen men named John Burns, their wives not listed, so cannot confirm that the family was in Butte. I did look through L&C birth records but didn’t find Jessie. They also aren’t indexed.
--- This marriage record names her parents:
------- Jessie’s father was John Henry Burns, born about 1873 in Marlborough, MA, son of John Burns and Catherine Delaney.
------Jessie’s mother was Florence McLeod, born about 1878 at Prince Edward Island, Canada, daughter of Lachlie McLeod and Jessie McLeod.
---- Social items in the Philipsburg paper mention Florence and John both living in Granite (Garnet? town) (not mentioned in articles together). One refers to John H Burns and a dancing school.
---- In 1900 (census), both John and Florence lived in Granite(Garnet?), (now the ghost town) in Granite County, MT.
---- John and Florence were married 27 Apr 1904 in Granite County (record found at FamilySearch.org, and that record is the source for the names of their parents, as listed above).
---- Since Jessie was b in 1905, she first appears with her family in the 1910 census – living at Cartersville School District, Lewis & Clark County MT – The household includes John, Florence, Jessie 5, Arthur 4, Douglass 2, and Kenneth 0. John had a “general merchandise” store. Florence has had 4 children, all four living, so Jessie was the oldest of the family.
---- In 1917 when John registered for the draft, his occupation was merchant, residence Wolf Creek MT DOB 24 Jan 1873
---- In 1920 the family lived at 403 North Ewing – John was not counted in the census there, and the household consisted of Florence, Jessie, Arthur, Douglas, Kenneth, Paul Donald, and twins Margaret and Marjory. Florence did not have an occupation listed, but the household included a servant.
---- In 1920, John H Burns was counted at Cartersville – his address was given as “Helena Wolf Creek Road” – he was a merchant – grocery store. This census sheet also says School District 13, which (see below) is Wolf Creek.
--- In 1930, the family was living in School District 13, Lewis &a Clark Co. MT. The household included John, Florence, Arthur, Kenneth, Paul Donald, and Margaret and Marjory. John was a merchant, general merchandise. http://www.lccountymt.gov/education/superintendent/historic-school-districts.html This website says that School Distric 13 was Wolf Creek. (It doesn’t mention Cartersville in the list).
---- In 1930 Jessie was living in Chicago, working as a secretary at a real estate business.
--------- When she married Norman, the witnesses were her sisters (the twins), and Norman’s brother Paul.
---- In 1940, John and Florence lived in Wolf Creek, he was a proprietor of a grocery store. None of their children were living with them.
--- Jessie’s twin sisters were born in Wolf Creek – the record for the 2nd twin says she is the 8th child, 7 still living, so Jessie probably had a sibling that died young.
---- Florence McLeod, wife of John H Burns Find A Grave Memorial# 51872830
---- California Death Index lists John Henry Burns b 24 Jan 1873, Massachusetts, died Marin (county) mother’s maiden name Delaney, father Burns. Death date 11 May 1943. This corresponds to Find A Grave Memorial# 87575270.
