Mrs. Nannie S. Barnum, aged 88, of 142 Saranac Ave., a charter member of the Friendly Writers Club and mother of former Judge William P. Barnum, died at 12:30 AM today at her residence following an illness of several years.
She was born in Greensboro, North Carolina on February 3, 1859, a daughter of Joseph and Anna Billings Knowlton. She spent her early life in Rock Creek, Ohio where she married William Payne Barnum in 1877. Her husband died in 1923.
Following her marriage she moved to Beaver Falls, Pa., where she and her husband were charter members of the First Christian Church.
Mrs. Barnum moved to Youngstown in 1917 becoming a member of the First Baptist Temple. Active in the Friendly Writers, her book of poems, “Musings” was commended for simplicity and sincerity in “The Poetry Review” in 1932. She was also a member of the Northeastern Ohio Poetry Society.
Mrs. Barnum leaves a daughter, Mrs. George S. Nutt with whom she made her home; two sons, Attorneys William P. of Youngstown and Wayne J. of Poland (Ohio); seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
