Rose was the daughter of Henry Wadsworth Terry and Anna Wright Hulburt, the wife of Rollin H. Cooke and mother to Elizabeth J. Cooke. At age 16 she graduated from the Hartford Female Seminary. She taught school and worked as a governess in New Jersey for the family of clergyman William Van Rensselaer. She became a well known published author of poetry, short stories and novels.
