Funeral services for Rev. Edward C. Avis, 72 year old song composer and minister, who died at the home of his brother, Ruben Avis, of Lafollette, were conducted Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at the Andersonville Baptist church. His father was the late John W. Avis, who was born in Kent County, England. His mother was a Canadian. They came to Andersonville from Michigan more than 50 years ago. The Rev. Mr. Avis was born in Leamington, Canada, out moved with his family to Flint, Michigan while he was a young boy. He joined the church when he was 14 years old. Fifty years ago he married to Miss Anna Hudiburg, who died a few months later. In 1882 he became the general secretary of the Y.M.C.A. of Owensboro, Ky. Later he was ordained a minister of the Methodist Episcopal church. In 1897 he went to the United Brethren church and served pastorates from the state of New York to the state of Washington. Mr. Avis figured in the writing of fundamental gospel songs and he has written more than 1,000 of them. One of his songs, "Row Me Over The Tide," has become popular after 45 years.
