A Matthews teen-ager died Wednesday night in a fiery two-car crash in western Union County about a half-mile south of Indian Trail, Highway Patrol officials said.
Claudia Jo Becker, 17, of 809 Tadlock Place was killed after she lost control of the station wagon she was driving and hit an oncoming car, said Highway Patrol Sgt. Eddie Cathey.
Becker was traveling north on Wesley Chapel-Stouts Road toward U.S. 74 at about 7:30 p.m. when she rounded a curve and lost control of her 1994 Ford, Cathey said. The station wagon crossed the center line and slid sideways into the path of a southbound BMW driven by David Van Blarcom, 57, of Monroe, he said.
The BMW struck Becker's car in the passenger side, and both vehicles caught fire and burned, Cathey said.
Becker died in the station wagon, he said.
Van Blarcom and two passengers in the BMW, Helen Van Blarcom and John Castella, both of Monroe, suffered minor injuries, Cathey said. They were treated at Carolinas Medical Center, according to the accident report.
Investigators believe Becker was driving about 55 mph in a 45-mph zone, according to the accident report
Her death was the 27th traffic fatality in Union County this year, Cathey said.
