Author, educator, musician. He was a prolific author of novels, most notably: The Moral Obligation To Be Intelligent, 1915; The Private Life of Helen of Troy, 1925; Galahad, 1926; Adam and Eve, 1927. He taught at Amherst College from 1903 to 1909 and was a professor of literature at Columbia University from 1909 to 1937. For a short time he taught soldiers during World War I. He was also an accomplished composer and musician. He served as the first president of the Julliard School of Music from 1928 to 1937 and was a director for the Metropolitan Opera. He was married to journalist and author, Helen Worden.
