Blue Lake Writer Mrs. C.E. Sheets Claimed 48 Hours Following Stroke
Mrs. C. E. (Wynne Jane) Sheets, 72, dean of rural correspondents for the Tribune-Times and conductor of the Blue Lake column died at 6:10 p.m. Wednesday in Holzer hospital after suffering a stroke 48 hours earlier. She resided on Blue Lake Dr., Rt 2 Crown City.
Mrs. Sheets started her writing career at the age of 12 years and at one time wrote for the Pomeroy-Tribune Telegraph and the Athens Messenger. She started writing for the Tribune over 30 years ago under Harold W. Wetherholt. Her unique style of reporting made her name a household word and she was known in distant areas.
Mrs. Sheets was born June 5, 1890 in Barboursville, W. Va. the daughter of Oran and Mary Frances Pierce Wogan. Her marriage to Chauncey E. Sheets who survives, took place Jan. 27, 1912, at Pomeroy. They spent their entire married years in Gallia County.
Children who survive are Mrs. Paul (Geraldine) Phalen, Mrs. Albert (Myra) Turner, Mrs. William (Willavine) Wolf and Russell Sheets, all of Columbus, Mrs. Tom (Anita) Brower of Waverly and Orin R. Sheets of Crown City. There are eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A brother and sister who survive are Mrs. Belle Roush of Letart Falls and Oran M. Wogan of Columbus. A sister, Mrs. Myra Grayson, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Sheets was a member of Elizabeth Chapel church and the Ohio Valley Grange. Services will be held at Elizabeth Chapel at 2 p.m. Saturday. Rev. Alfred Holley and Rev. Kenneth Betz will officiate. Burial will be in Mound Hill cemetery under the direction of the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral home. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Friday and until the hour of the service. Pall bearers will be Beecher Poling, Brisco Baldwin, Harold Saunders, Harold Steger, Ray Willis and Paris Young.
