(Special to the Evening News) MAYBEE - May 7, William Leibold, Sr. 84, of Bluebush avenue, died at 6:45 a.m. today at his home after an illness of one month. Mr. Leibold was born in Romerz, Germany and in October 1880 came to the United States, landing at Locust Point in Baltimore, Maryland, and coming directly to Michigan. His marriage to Amanda Maul, a former schoolmate, was in January 22, 1884, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Monroe. They lived on a farm, now owned by their sons John and Anthony Leibold, in Maybee and upon retirement in 1922 moved to the Bluebush Avenue home. Mrs. Leibold died February 17, [1926]. Mr. Leibold helped to build St. Joseph's Catholic Church, of which he was a member. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society of the church. Mr. Leibold was caretaker of St. Joseph's cemetery and prided himself on his memory, knowing everyone buried in the cemetery, when they had died, and where they were buried. When Mr. Leibold reached Maybee from Germany, he was unable to speak English. As he was stepping off of the train in from of a hotel a crowd was raising a pole for James Garfield, nominee for President of the United States. The crowd was cheering and Mr. Leibold mistakenly believed he was being welcomed to the village. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Charles Lohr and Mrs. Leo Gramlich of Maybee and Mrs. William Quell of Monroe; four sons, John, Anthony, and William of Maybee, and Leo of Monroe; 22 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A solemn requiem high mass will be conducted Friday at 9 a.m. from St. Joseph's Church, Maybee. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Members of the Holy Name Society will meet in the home Thursday at 8:30 p.m. for prayer services.
