He was traded with outfielder Jim Russell and pitcher Al Lyons on Nov. 18, 1947 to the Boston Braves for second baseman Danny Murtaugh and outfielder Johnny Hopp. As a backup to Phil Masi, he still got into five games in the 1948 World Series against the Cleveland Indians. He was 2 for 9 (.222) with a homer and a RBI and walked five times. He was sold on Sept. 26, 1949 to the Chicago White Sox but played in only one game for them in 1950. His six-year totals were .273 with 31 homers and 132 RBIs. He was the grandfather of major-league pitcher Roger Salkeld.
