Major League Baseball Player. For nine seasons (1954 to 1955 and 1957 to 1963), he was a pitcher with the Boston Red Sox, Washington Senators, Chicago White Sox and Houston Colt .45s. Born Russell Paul Kemmerer, he attended Peabody High School in Pittsburgh and initially played collegiate basketball at the University of Pittsburgh, before focussing on baseball. Selected by the Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 1951, he marked his Major League debut with Boston on June 27, 1954. Additionally, he served a stint with the United States Air Force during the development of his baseball career. In his first starting assignment on July 18, 1954, he pitched a one-hit shutout against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park. Mainly a starter during the first half of his career, he experienced his most successful season in 1960 while with the Senators, when he recorded six wins with an impressive 2.98 ERA in mostly a reliever role. In 302 regular season games, he compiled a 43 win, 59 loss record with a 4.46 lifetime ERA in 1,066 innings pitched. Following his baseball career, he was an English teacher. He authored the book "Ted Williams: "Hey Kid, Just Get It Over The Plate!" (2002) which recounted his life.
