He was a 14-time All-Star, a 2-time National League MVP and won a gold glove at shortstop in 1960. Most of his games were played at the shortstop or first base position. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977. In 2013, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his contribution to sports. His uniform number 14 has been retired by the Chicago Cubs.
