In1844 Eli graduated from Newburg Academy. He entered Williams College at Williamstown, Mass., where he graduated in the class of 1848. He graduated from the Union Theological Seminary in the summer of 1851, and on July (or Sept.) 16th of that year was married to Henrietta Sophia Howell, of Coklenham, Orange County, New York. They first moved to California. In 1858 he received a call to be pastor of the Fort Street Presbyterian Church, in Honolulu. In 1868 they returned to California. In 1872 they moved to Newburg, New York to the First Congregational Church of Jamestown and in 1875 to Jacksonville, Ill., were he received from Williams College the degree of Doctor of Divinity. Excerpts from the "Narrative of the Clergymen who have ministered to the First Presbyterian Church of Racine, Wisconsin from 1836 to 1902" compiled by Byron B. Northrop and read on October 5th 1902 on the 64th anniversary of the church and the 50th anniversary of the building.
The ecclesiastical relation of the First Presbyterian Church of Racine with the Milwaukee District Convention was dissolved and the church joined the Milwaukee Presbytery. On Monday evening December 20, 1880, Dr. Corwin was installed by a committee of Presbytery. During his eight years Dr. Corwin remained with us he accomplished much for its welfare. Through his efforts the present Stained glass windows were added, the organ was moved from the gallery to the front of the sanctuary, and the Sunday school room rebuilt and enlarged. He resigned Sept. 9, 1888 and moved to Chicago.
Rev. Corwin, his wife Sophia, and two sons, Cecil Sherman and Arthur Mills Corwin all joined First Presbyterian Church on Sept. 16, 1880. Cecil Sherman Corwin married Emma Payne, widow of Charles Edwin Erskine, in 1917. Cecil Corwin interviewed Frank Lloyd Wright in 1887 for Wright's first job in Chicago (as a tracer in the office of Joseph Lyman Silsbee): Wright and Corwin shared office space in the Schiller Building in downtown Chicago in 1893 after Wright left Adler and Sullivan to set out on his own.
