Appears on the 1870 census as age 13 in Dodge county, Wisconsin, living in a household with his brother, Henry, Henry's wife and their child, and their father, age 60. He immigrated with his father and siblings arriving in New York City on the ship "Union" on 24 August 1867. His age upon arrival there is given as 8.

Appears on the 1875 Minnesota census, age 18, living with his sister, Catherine/Sophie Hille and her husband in Dunbar, Faribault, MN. He is next found on the 1880 census in Luverne, Rock county, MN, and his age is 22. He has a wife Mathilda (James?), age 19, born Wisconsin. His occupation is blacksmith. A brother of Bernard, "John Henry", age 30 and a sister-in-law, Anna James, age 17 are also in the household.

There were no more records found in the census. A family story is that he 'died very young, had one daughter".

The only other document found is a "Declaration of Intent" to be a citizen of the U.S. dated Nov. 2nd 1878. This confirms his birth year as 1857 and that he was born in "Norw?, Germany". He did sign his name on the document as "John B. Hofelmann" which would seem to imply he was literate.
