Actress. After working the Broadway circuit as a chorus girl, she would later come to motion pictures as a legitimate actress appearing in a number of films in Hollywood during the 1930s. Her first screen role came in 1929 in "The Taming of the Shrew" opposite Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. in the role of Bianca. Over the next four years she would appear in twenty-one films. Some of her twenty-one screen credits include "Min and Bill" (1930), "Cabin in the Cotton" (1932), "Bondage" (1933), and "One Man's Journey" (1933). During this time she would co-star with such talents as Marie Dressler, Wallace Beery, Joel McCrea, Bette Davis, Lionel Barrymore, and Richard Barthelmess. In 1933 Dorothy married film director, screenwriter, and producer Merian C. Cooper and they were happily married until his death in 1973. In 1956, she made her return to the screen in "The Searchers" starring John Wayne. The following year, she appeared in her final film "The Wings of Eagles" and retired from acting. In her later years, Dorothy very seldom wrote or granted interviews about her short yet memorable career. She lived in Los Angeles until her death from congestive heart failure at age 82.
