Art went to the country school right behind their ranch until he finished the eighth grade. He worked on the ranch with his dad until he was called into service during the Korean War. Art proudly served his country in the Army from 1952 to 1954. It was only recently that Art talked about his time in the Tank Company of the 223rd Infantry. Art came back to work the ranch after his honorable discharge in January of 1954.
Art met Joan Fischer at a dance and on June 28, 1958 they were married. They had three boys: Arvis, Arden, and Gary.
Ranch life and work was important to Art but so was time spent with family. Art would make time to be involved in 4-H helping the boys show pigs and cattle. He also made time for their rodeos and car racing. Work hard, play hard, and make sure you are not late for dinner. It is at 12 sharp.
Art was an early member of the Hamill Horseman Club. He also enjoyed flying and coyote hunting with Elvin Zimbelman and Jim Anderson. Art loved to fish and hunt and getting to know the hunters that came to the ranch. He also enjoyed the day to day of the ranch and seeing all the changes and progress that had been made over his 85 years. Art lived almost all his life in the house where he was born, only being gone for his time in Korea.
Art passed away suddenly on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD.
Art will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents and son Arden.
