Silas Braffett was born probably in what is today Burlington, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. He probably moved to the area of Harrison, Darke County, Ohio around 1820 where he married Mary Woods who was born in Virginia. Silas helped lay out the town of Braffettsville in Harrison, Darke County, Ohio in 1833. The 12 children of Silas and Mary were probably born in Ohio before the family moved to Sims, Grant County, Indiana around 1848 when Silas bought land in Indiana. The family lived in Sims through the deaths of Mary (1866) and Silas (1867). Some children lived in Richland, Grant County. The descendants of Silas and Mary migrated to Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona, California, and Oregon.
Silas is probably buried in Thrailkill Cemetery, but no marker has been found.
