Samuel J. Bame, Jr., a former longtime resident of Los Alamos, passed away December 14, 2014, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Sam was born January 12, 1924, in Lexington, North Carolina.

His boyhood fascination with science, particularly space science, shaped his future endeavors. He began his college education at Catawba College before entering in the Army in 1943. His aptitude in physics allowed him to be selected for the Army Specialized Training Program at Penn State in 1943-44, and he served the Proximity Fuse Program and Ordnance Technical Intelligence in the United States, Philippines, and Japan in 1945-46. After the war he earned his bachelor's degree in physics from University of North Carolina and his master's and Ph.D. degrees in nuclear physics from Rice University.

He joined Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in 1951. His early years were devoted to low energy nuclear physics but his later interests shifted to space science and technology. During his 40-year career, he served as principal investigator for more than 60 neutron and space plasma instruments that he conceived, designed, and implemented. His neutron detectors, carried on Vela and follow-on nuclear test detection satellites, have provided continuous support of the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty since 1963. Plasma analyzers of his design were flown on such NASA and ESA missions as the Interplanetary Monitoring Platform, International Sun Earth Explorer, and Ulysses to study the space plasma environment. Sam served on a number of NASA advisory committees, and received two LANL Distinguished Performance Awards and four NASA Group Achievement Awards for his space plasma work. He was a fellow of LANL, the American Geophysical Union, and several other professional societies, and authored over 400 scientific papers.

Sam was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Joyce Fancher Bame, with whom he traveled to all seven continents. He is survived by his daughters, Karen Bame (husband Rick Sundell) of Kansas City, MO, Dorthe Carr (husband Brad) of Albuquerque, and Barbara Haschke (husband Greg) of Albuquerque; his grandchildren, Sam and Maggie Carr and Anna and Peter Haschke; and his brother Davis Bame of Lewes, DE.

No memorial service is planned. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of New Mexico, 4015 Carlisle NE, Suite E, Albuquerque, NM 87107.
