Paul served in the U.S. 5th Army, 88th Division ("Cloverleaf", "Blue Devils"), 349th Infantry Regiment ("Liberty & Rights", "Kraut Killers"). He survived intense hostilities in Italy during World War II only to be killed when the B-17 (#44-6873) carrying him and other soldiers on their first leg home to the U.S. was ditched in the Tyrrhenian Sea due to engine failure. There were 25 on board the aircraft: 13 of those were fatalities and 12 survived and were rescued some twelve hours after the crash. Recipient of Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct and numerous other medals. Paul was survived by his wife Reba and son Jimmy (San Antonio, TX), along with his mother, father, brothers, sisters, and other relatives.
