Herbert arrived in San Francisco in December 1912 aboard the ship Moana, and became a naturalized citizen in April 1925.

He first married Hilda Plant, also of Australia, in 1915 in Kansas City. Their daughter Ruth was born in Indiana in 1917, and the family moved to Los Angeles sometime before 1920.

Hilda died in 1941, and he married Eva (Jaderquist) Sackerson in 1942.
