Major League Baseball Player. Born in Havana, Arkansas, he was a three-time All-Star pitcher, playing for the Boston Braves, New York Yankees, and Kansas City Athletics during his eleven year career. He played Major League Baseball from 1942 to 1955, taking a three year break to serve in World War II. During his playing career he won twenty games in a season four times and finished with 139 wins against 116 losses, had 51 saves and a career earned run average of 3.49. He had a phenomenal September stretch in 1948 where he pitched nine complete games in twenty-nine days, winning seven of them to help lead the Braves to the National League pennant. A Boston teammate of hall of Fame pitcher Warren Spahn, the duo was so effective that the slogan "Spahn and Sain and pray for rain" became popular, showing the important role the pitching pair had on the success of their team. After his playing days, Sain remained involved in baseball serving as the pitching coach for the Athletics, Chicago White Sox, Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves and Detroit Tigers. He died in Downers Grove, Illinois after a long illness.
