Sarah Jane Thompson was born in 1828 in Virginia, the daughter of John Thompson and Eliza Whitlock. She married Thomas M. Terry in 1846 in Caroline County, Virginia, and they had 9 children.

She and her family were living in Hanover County for the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 census enumerations. She and Thomas were living in Talcott, Summers County, West Virginia in 1900 with their son William H. Terry and his family and daughter Rosa E. Terry.

Sarah died 1 May 1917 in Richmond and was buried 2 May 1917 in Doswell, Hanover County, Virginia. See the Mount Hope Church Cemetery in Doswell for a probable location for the burial.
