Reverend Lloyd was born in England in 1821, and labored for the Congregational Church in England. Lloyd married Miss Sarah Prince about 1840. Sarah's mother name was Theodosia Baxter Prince of Leintwardine, herself a writer. They came to the United States on a new American Packet Ship in the Spring of 1850. Beside their two daughters, Georgina H. born January 18, 1850, and Wilhelmina, born April 18, 1852, the only two children who lived to adulthood, were: William A. born November 7, 1847, died September 21, 1850; George H. was born January 22, 1846, died April 28, 1849; Marian Salome, born April 11, 1852, died March 11, 1853; and Octavia Martha, born November 11, 1859, died October 12, 1860. They are buried at Branchville Cemetery.
Lloyd became the first regularly installed pastor of the Branchville (New Jersey)Presbyterian Church, in 1861, at the dawn of the American Civil War. He was a staunch Unionist, and preached hotly against Secession. Many Copperheads (southern sympathizers) lived in Sussex County, and during one his sermons, a drunkard shot at Lloyd while preaching in the pulpit- luckily the church Sexton knocked the shooters arm upward, and the bullet lodged in the ceiling of the Sanctuary.
Due to a split Branchville congregation, Lloyd was sent to the Mission field in 1865, after publishing a long verse named "The Devil in Dixie". Lloyd later became the pastor in Escanaba, Michigan; Horicon Wisconsin, and Moingona, Iowa (home of the famous Kate Shelley and Mamie Doud Eisenhower).
Returning for a visit to Branchville in 1882 after the Great Fire destroyed most of the towns' business center, Lloyd was asked to return to become the Pastor of the Branchville Presbyterian Church once again. He did so, and lived in peace, writing and preaching the rest of his days, passing away in 1906.
Lloyd wrote much poetry. He,and later his daughters published a few of his post- Civil War writings, including "Lyrics of Lake and Stream", and "Lenno and Owassa" a long verse and poem about the tale of two Indian Lovers. Lake Owassa, just north of Branchville, is named for this poem.
