Musician. He was principally known as an organist and in 1855 is credited with linking Mendelssohn's tune to Charles Wesley's words "Hark The Herald Angels Sing" which are now well-known all over the world. He was born in Devon and was one of the choristers when Felix Mendelssohn conducted his "Elijah" at Exeter in 1847. He served as singing professer at the Royal Academy of Music and received an honorary Doctorate in Music from Dublin University in 1900. He also served as organist at Waltham Abbey, Essex.
