Thomas M. Terry was born in 1820 in Virginia. He married Sarah Jane Thompson in 1846 in Caroline County, Virginia, and they had 9 children.
He and his family were living in Hanover County for the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 census enumerations. He and Sarah were living in Talcott, Summers County, West Virginia in 1900 with their son William H. Terry and his family and daughter Rosa E. Terry.
Thomas died sometime after the 1900 census enumeration but prior to Sarah's death in 1917 when her death certificate lists her as widowed . See the Mount Hope Church Cemetery in Doswell for a probable location for the burial.
