A Dominican Missionary Sister of the Sacred Heart from Kiel, Germany. She was one of seven white missionaries who were murdered probably by Nationalist guerilla fighters at St Paul’s Mission at Musami in the Mangwendi Communal lands, a Jesuit boarding school. The seven killed were Sisters Mary Epiphany Schneider (71), Mary Ceslaus Stiegler (59) both from Bavaria, and Mary Magdala Lewandowski (42) from Kiel, and Mary Joseph from England. The men were Fathers Christopher Shepherd Smith (33), a Briton born in East Africa and Martin Thomas (45) from London, the two were Jesuits and finally Brother John Conway (57) from Tralee, Ireland. Their lives are celebrated every year on February 7th with a memorial vigil.

She arrived in Rhodesia around 1959 from Kiel. She was a teacher and had taught in missions in Zambia and Rhodesia. Her second spell in Musami started in 1972.

They are known as the Musami Martyrs.
