Sir Alexander Cockburn-Campbell, 2nd Baronet came out to Western Australia in 1857 (reason unknown by family), after a short stint working in Perth as the Superintendent of Police, he was appointed Government Resident at Albany. He remained in this role until his death.

Sir Alexander main contributions to Albany, were the improvements to York Street, which was a mess only able to be crossed by wooden plank. The building of the court house in Albany was also contributed to his efforts.
