Clark Bird was born in 1800 in Burke County, North Carolina, the son of Jonathan Bird and Angelica Banning. In some records, Clark's name is listed as Clark Byrd. Clark and Mary's children used a mixture of the Bird and Byrd spellings.

He married Mary Pauline Curtis in 1820 in Burke County, and they had 16 children.

The family probably moved from Burke County to Macon County sometime between the 1830 Burke County census enumeration and 1836 when Clark Bird bought land and received a land grant in Macon County:

108. JAMES GALBREATH to CLARK BIRD, both of Macon, for $80, all my goods, household stuff, implements & furniture, especially that in schedule annexed: bay horse colt, 11 sheep, 4 sows & pigs, 2 shoats, 1 calf, 1 crib of corn, all my fodder and ruffness, 2 beds & furniture, and sleds, poles, oven pan and all my household & kitchen furniture, the premises standing in a certain tenement, now or late in the occupation of James Galbreath. I have put Clark Bird in possession by delivering to him one knife at sealing & delivering of these presents. Jan. 26, 1836. James Galbraeth. Wit: JOHN (his X mark) BRYSON. Proven by Bryson, April 1836 court. Registered June 25, 1836.

201. BENJAMIN S. BRITTAIN to CLARK BIRD, both of Macon, for $600, 640 ac. on Telico Cr., a reserve granted to an Indian by the name of SKEKEN by treaties of 1817 and 1819, and by Skeken conveyed to GIDEON F. MORRIS. Feb. 17, 1836. Benjamin S. Brittain. Wit: JOHN HALL. Acknowledged in Feb. 1836 court. Registered Mar. 15, 1836.

Grant 2846 Warrant 3. 110½ acres. Macon County. Clark Bird. 29 Oct. 1836. Beg. at a water oak.

Additional child:
16- daughter (died in infancy).

The family was living in Macon County in 1840, 1850 (Tennessee Valley), and 1860 (Burningtown Township).

According to the Heritage of Macon County, North Carolina, Clark would rise early every morning, winter and summer, and wade Tellico Creek barefoot to feed his livestock.

Mary died in 1863, and Clark married Melinda West (born Melinda Shepherd) in 1868 in Macon County. Melinda had 4 children from her previous marriage to Daniel West (c.1810-1862).

Children:
1- Elijah Henderson West (1837- ).
2- Jane A. West (1841- ).
3- Ida Roxanna West Clampet (1858-1914).
4- Cebia Theodosia West Fouts (1860-1909).

Clark and Melinda were living in Burningtown Township in 1870 with Melinda's 2 younger daughters and in 1880 with no children. Clark died in 1885, probably in Macon County. The 1885 probate of his estate references the 12 children of Clark and Mary who were living in 1885.

The Bird Family Cemetery is described in the Heritage of Macon County, North Carolina:

A family cemetery lies atop a knoll near the Tellico Baptist Church and is maintained by Thad Byrd. ... [the cemetery] is on a hilltop just south of the Tellico Baptist Church on the old Byrd property.
