William followed in his father's footsteps and took up coal mining to make ends meet. He was working in 1917 for The Peobody Coal Co., at the Woodside mine.
William married Margaret Helen McDonald at St. Patrick's Catholic church in Springfield, 27 Nov 1913, attended by Mrs. Frank T. Lederle, sister of the bride, and Harry McDonald, a brother.
They were the parents of two sons, William and John Henry, both raised and lived in Springfield and served their country in WWII.
At age 48, William Frank registered for the WWII draft in Springfield 27 Apr 1942. He was 5'10" 160 pounds with blue eyes and black hair and a light complexion. At the time, he was working for The Stewart Construction Co. of Springfield.

William F. Nierhoff, 74, of Springfield, died Wednesday at St. John's Hospital. A lifetime resident of Springfield, Mr. Nierhoff was a member of Sacred Heart Church.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret H.; two sons, William Jr. and John H. of Springfield; one brother, Frank of Springfield; three sisters, Mrs. Clara Harrell, Mrs. Emma Harrell of Springfield and Mrs. Anna Corday of Dawson; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
