Peter Mertz was born in 1822 in Oldenburg, (Lower Saxony) Niedersachsen, Bayern, Germany, the third child & son of Franz Jacob & Maria Dorothea 'Kuntz' Mertz. The family were farmers.

Franz Jacob & Dorothea Mertz emmigrated with five of their children: Franze (25), Peter (18), Bernhardt (16), Carl (13) & Carolina (11), departing La Havre, France aboard the ship 'Cresent', and arriving in New York Harbor on 17 Jul 1840. The family arrived in Germantown, Jefferson County, Iowa in 1848. Soon after their arrival in Germantown, wife and mother Maria Dorothea died and was buried there in Hope Lutheran Cemetery.

About 1950 Peter married Anna Maria Dallner. Peter was a farmer. They had 2 children:

1. Charles W. Mertz, 1851-1890
2. Hazel Florence 'Hattie' Mertz, 1862-1949

Peter & Anna moved their family to Chicago, Cook County, Illinois by 1870 where he was a butcher. Son Charles was listed as a Soldier and daughter Hattie was 8 years old. By the 1880 Federal census they were living on a farm near Pea Ridge, Brown County, Illinois where he was a farmer, cattle feeder & dealer.

Peter's wife died around 1890 and Peter died in 1902 in Brown County and are buried in Mound Cemetery in Timewell, Brown County, Illinois.
