August 12, 1921 - July 20, 2014 Noted organist, choir director, and composer Vicar Earle Copes, aged 92, died July 20 at The Pines of Sarasota . Born on August 12, 1921 in Norfolk, Virginia, he was the only child of Lena Early and Archibald Vicar Copes. He obtained degrees from Davidson College and Union Theological Seminary. He served as minister of music in several of United Methodism's largest churches, played organ recitals in 32 states, composed many hymn tunes and anthems, and consulted on installations of major organs. After retiring, he became known for sharing his love of music as a substitute in various churches in the Sarasota and Bradenton area. Earle is survived by his wife, Laura (Eakin), with whom he recently celebrated 70 years of marriage; sons Larry and Ron Copes and their wives Jane Snell and Lisa Pribanic; granddaughters Lynn Tommasini and Rowan Copes; and many good friends. He was well-cared for by the staff at Bahia Oaks Lodge and The Pines. A memorial service will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Guild of Organists or the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Sarasota.
