Born in Cecil County, Maryland, he was nicknamed "The Delaware Peach" making his debut as a right handed pitcher for the Boston Beaneaters on April 20, 1898. For 13 seasons he played with the Boston Beaneaters (1898-1905), Pittsburgh Pirates (1906-09) and St. Louis Cardinals in 1910. Known for his sweeping curve ball, he ended his career with a record of 249 wins, 207 loss, 388 complete games, 50 shutouts, 1651 strikeouts, a 2.63 eraned run average and was the last pitcher to throw a no-hitter in the 19th century. He died at age 71 in Elkton, Maryland, and was posthumously elected into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1977 and the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995.
