Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. Born in Salem, New Jersey, he was a powerful swinging left fielder making his debut with the Washington Senators on September 16, 1921. For eighteen seasons, he played with the Washington Senators (1921-29, 1933, 1938), St. Louis Browns (1930-32) and Detroit Tigers (1934-37). He drove in 100 or more runs on 11 occasions, hit .300 or better 11 times, was on the 1936 All-Star team and led the Washington Senators to a World Series titles in (1924) with a .344 average and three home runs. He concluded his career with a record of 2735 hits, 1483 runs scored, 248 homeruns, 1609 runs batted in and a .316 batting average. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1968 and died in Bridgeton, New Jersey, at age 70.
