Major League Baseball Player. For eleven seasons (1943 to 1945 and 1947 to 1954), he was a pitcher with the Philadelphia Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals. Born Carl Alvin Scheib, he attended Gratz High School where he played baseball. Prior to the 1943 season, Schieb was signed as an amateur free agent by the Philadelphia Athletics who were short of players due to World War II. He made his Major League debut on September 6, 1943 at the age of sixteen-years, 248 days, thus making him the youngest player in the Major Leagues at that time. He would pitch in 25 games over the next three seasons (1943 to 1945), before serving with the United States Army in Germany during the close of and following the end of World War II. After returning home, he resumed his career and produced a career-high 14 wins in 1948. In 267 career regular season games, he compiled a 45 win, 65 loss record with a lifetime 4.88 ERA, in 1,070 innings pitched. After retiring from baseball, he operated a car wash.
